Canvas - Respondus Accommodations (Duplicate Quiz)
If a quiz requires Respondus Lockdown Browser for academic integrity, you may occasionally have a student who cannot use it due to an accommodation. In that case, you have a couple of options: you can create a duplicate quiz that excludes that student from the proctoring requirement, or, if you are using Canvas's New Quizzes feature, you can print the quiz for the student instead.
Duplicating quiz method:
An important consideration is student grading and assignment visibility. This tutorial will walk you through using the 'Assign To' feature to ensure each student only sees the quiz they are supposed to take.
Step 1: Creating the quiz Copy
Access your Canvas course
Select “Quizzes” from your Course navigation
Find the quiz to be duplicated
Select the three dot menu to the right of the quiz title
Select “Copy To” (Note: If you are using “New Quizzes”, you can use 'Duplicate' instead for a quicker result.)
Select the same course your in now (we want the duplicate inside this course)
The quiz copy automatically:
Will have the same name
Will not have anyone assigned to it
Will not have due dates
Will inherit the quiz publishing status
Select the three dot menu next to the quiz copy name
Choose “Edit”
Rename the copy to 'QuizName - Non Respondus'. Keeping part of the original title makes it clear the two quizzes are related - this one simply does not require Respondus.
Review the quiz copy to make sure the questions are the same.
12. If you are using a weighted grading system please make sure that the copy of the quiz is in the same Assignment Group as the Original quiz.
Step 2: ”Assign to” + Grading
In this step, you will assign each quiz to the correct students. The accommodated student should only see the Non-Respondus copy, and the rest of your roster should only see the original. No student should have access to both quizzes.
Non-Respondus Quiz
Access and edit the Non-Respondus quiz.
In the 'Assign To' field, replace 'Everyone' with just the accommodated student.
Adjust the due dates according to the students needs and accommodations.
Save the quiz.
Respondus (original) Quiz
Access and edit the Respondus quiz.
In the 'Assign To' field, replace 'Everyone' with the students who will be using Respondus Lockdown Browser. Make sure to exclude the accommodated student from this list.
Adjust the due dates according to the students needs.
Save the quiz.
Pro Tip (Totally optional)
If you have a large number of students with similar accommodations, you can use the 'Manage Tags' feature under the 'People' tool to create informal groups - for example, 'Respondus Users' and 'Non-Respondus Users.' Assign each student to the appropriate tag, then in the future use the 'Assign To' feature to select the tag instead of choosing students individually. Students cannot see which tags have been assigned to them.
