Please check out the following links from Microsoft providing background information on what the Microsoft Authenticator App is as well as how it works:
Enrolling in Microsoft MFA using the Microsoft Authenticator App:
When logging in to your University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Microsoft 365 account you will see the following prompt to enroll in Microsoft MFA:
Click Next and be prompted to provide Additional security verification.
In the drop down menu select Mobile app for using the Microsoft Authenticator app.
After selecting next, the Configure mobile app screen will appear.
Install the Microsoft Authenticator App on your smart phone or tablet
When ready, use your iOS or Android device to scan the QR code in the prompt and click Next.
The system will then run a test. Respond to the notification on your iOS or Android device.
After the test is successful, you will be prompted to provide additional security verification for a backup method (phone number). IT encourages adding your mobile device phone number to act as a backup if you are unable to access or use the mobile app for any reason. Alternatively, it can be skipped by selecting Done.
