General Operating Instructions for Classrooms

  • Technology operation in general access classrooms is relatively consistent, with a few variations. 

  • Departmental classrooms, labs, as well as teaching labs may have different configurations.

General Access Classrooms with Media Towers

Instructions

Main Power:

Turn on tower by pressing the main power switch on the Media Tower. This turns on all equipment within the tower including amplification/audio. When switch is on, it will illuminate or a light next to it will.

Projector:

  1. Turn on the projector by pressing the projector button (indicated with image or text) and hold for 3-5 seconds

    1. This process is also used when turning the projector off

  2. The projector will automatically display the last input utilized select the desired input if different

  3. Volume control for the projected media is controlled with the turn knob under the projector power button on the media tower

    1. Audio will only work in the classroom if the main power is switched on

  4. Turn projector off when finished

Input Selection:

  • Most classrooms have the following input options:

    • Computer

    • Laptop

    • Document Camera

    • DVD/VHS/Blu-Ray*

  • Select the desired input to display through the projector or, if audio only, through the in-house speakers

Computer Projection:

  1. Turn on the classroom computer if not already on

  2. On Media Tower select PC, Mac, or an image of a computer

    1. Main Power button must be on for audio to emit through in-house speakers

  3. Audio controls through the can influence the in-house speakers

    1. Classroom audio is controlled through the Media Tower though can also be adjusted through the computer

  4. Restart the classroom computer when finished

Laptop Projection: 

  1. On Media Tower select Laptop or image of a laptop

    1. If using laptop, remember to bring any additional adapters necessary for connecting the laptop to the projector

  2. Connect laptop using VGA or HDMI connection in room, audio cable also available

    1. Most connections are located underneath the chalk or white/marker board; some connections are attached to the equipment tower

  3. If you are unsure how to extend or duplicate the display from the laptop to the projector consult this KnowledgeBase article. 

  4. Remember to take your laptop and any adapters with you.

DVD/VCR/Blu-Ray:

  1. On Media Tower select button with desired equipment

    1. Please review the directory of classrooms to verify which of these is in each classroom

  2. If necessary, press the open/close button to eject the disc tray, place media, and then close tray with the same button

  3. Utilize the remote control to play, fast forward, or rewind media

  4. Adjust volume utilizing the volume knob on the Media Tower

  5. Remember to retrieve media once class or media is finished

Document Camera:

  1. Power switch on document camera must be switched on

  2. On the Media Tower, press button labeled Document Camera or an image of a document camera

    1. If a document camera is delivered to a classroom the laptop input selection must be selected

  3. Adjust all document camera settings on the document camera

  4. When finished, turn off the document camera

When finished using classroom equipment, remember to turn off the projector. 

Lecture Halls with Media Towers and Touch Panel Displays

Halsey Science Center 106

Starting the Session:

  1. The touch panel display is located on the lab table not teaching station. If black/blank touch any part of the screen to wake it up

  2. Select Begin to start session

  3. Press Left or Right to begin

    1. Left and right references are when facing the class not facing the chalk boards

  4. Select On under power to turn on the projector

  5. Repeat to power other projector by going selecting VPs across the top of the touch panel

Device Selection:

The Device Selection screen is native to the projector; if in the Left menu, the selected device will only appear on the left display. To switch between device selections, select VPs across the top to switch projector input.

Lighting:

  1. Select Lights on the Device Selection Screen (also available on Left or Right screen)

  2. Light options are:

    1. All On

    2. Present (only chalkboard lights are on in this mode)

    3. Video (back three rows of lights are dimmed in this mode)

    4. C. Board (will toggle chalkboard lights on and off)

    5. Off

Audio:

Volume controls are for all devices in the classroom and are located on the Device Selection screen. Adjust volume by pressing up or down arrows

Computer Projection:

  1. Turn on computer if it is not already on

  2. Select Computer at Device Selection screen to display installed computer

    1. Volume control can operate through the computer as well as in-house speakers

Laptop Projection:

If using laptop, remember to bring any additional adapters necessary for connecting the laptop to the projector

  1. Connect laptop using VGA connection in teaching station

    1. If unsure how to extend or duplicate the display from the laptop to the projector consult the laptop's users' manual or this KnowledgeBase article.

  2. Select Laptop at the Device Selection Screen to display connected laptop

  3. Press Prev on touch panel to return to the Device Selection screen when finished 

DVD/VCR & Blu-Ray Projection:

  1. Select DVD/VCR at Device Selection screen

  2. Press DVD or VCR on next screen to specify media type on device

    1. If necessary, press the open/close button to eject the disc tray, place media, and then close tray with the same button

  3. Utilize touch panel display to play, fast forward, or rewind media

  4. Select Prev to return to Device Selection screen

  5. Select Blu-Ray player at Device Selection screen

  6. Press the open/close button to eject the disc trap, place media, and then close tray with the same button

  7. Utilize touch panel display to play, fast forward, or rewind media

  8. Select Prev to return to Device Selection screen

Document Camera Projection:

  1. Power switch on document camera must be switched on

  2. Select Doc Cam on the Device Selection screen to display document camera

Microphone Options:

A hand-held microphone as well as a lapel microphone is available for use; each device must be powered on separately from classroom equipment. The microphone volume is controlled from the Device Selection screen in all menus except DVD/VCR.

Ending the Session:

  1. Press Home and End on touch panel to end session

  2. Touch panel will read: "You are about to shut down the system. Are you sure you want to do that?" Click yes.

  3. Remember to restart the classroom computer

  4. Take all personal items especially flash drives and any adapters 

Please note: the touch panel display in this room is mobile. If it is removed from the charging dock during class time, please return it to the charging dock at the end of the session. 

Halsey Science Center 107 & 109

These two lecture halls are linked together because their functionality is identical. Each classroom is operated by touch panel display and has two (2) projectors. 

Starting the Session:

  1. The touch panel display is now wired and located on the computer cart. If black/blank touch any part of the screen to wake it up.

  2. The Sources screen will appear once the session begins.

  3. Left and right references are when facing the class not facing the chalk boards

Projectors: 

  1. Select Projector Power at the top of the touch panel display to turn on the projectors.

    1. Each projector must be turned on separately

  2. Select Sources to return to the source options

    1. Once again, left and right references are when facing the class not facing the chalk boards

Screens:

  • Screens will move down when a projector is powered on but can be raised or lowered as needed

  • Screens will move up at the end of the session

  • If the system was not shut down screens can be operated independently of the begin and end session options

  • Select Go to Screens at the top of the screen to go to the screen submenu.

  • There is an option to move both screen together or separately. The up arrow moves the screens up down moves the screens down.

Lighting:

To adjust lighting selecting Lights on the touch panel display; options are:

  • On

  • Off

  • Video (only three (3) back rows on)

  • Present (front lights off

There are also chalkboard light options:

  • Left chalk board on

  • Left chalk board off

  • Right chalk board on

  • Right chalk board off

Audio:

  • Volume controls are for all devices in the classroom and are located on the Sources screen

    • Adjust volume by pressing up or down arrows above the Program Volume title

  • Please note: when switching audio devices remember to stop playback. If played a VHS tape, as an example, the audio will continue until playback is paused/stopped. 

Computer Projection:

  1. Turn on computer if it is not already on

  2. Select PC at sources screen to display installed computer

  3. Volume control can operate through the computer as through the touch panel display

Laptop Projection:

If using laptop, remember to bring any additional adapters necessary for connecting the laptop to the projector

  1. Connect laptop using VGA connection attached to the Media Tower

  2. If unsure how to extend or duplicate the display from the laptop to the projector consult the laptop's users' manual or this KnowledgeBase article

  3. Select Laptop at the Selection Screen to display connected laptop

Blu-Ray Projection:

Blu-Ray players can play CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Ray discs. IT cannot guarantee playback of burned CDs and DVDs. Please verify functionality prior to using in class.

  • Select Blu-Ray at Sources screen

    • All Blu-Ray functions are through the touch panel display

    • Except the open/close button which is on the physical player

  • Select Blu-Ray player at Selection screen

    • Press the open/close button to eject the disc trap, place media, and then close tray with the same button

    • Utilize touch panel display to play, fast forward, or rewind media

DVD/VCR Projection:

The DVD player can play CDs and DVDs. IT cannot guarantee playback of burned CDs and DVDs. Please verify functionality prior to using in class.

  1. Select DVD/VCR at Sources screen

  2. All DVD/VCR functions are through the touch panel display

  3. Except the open/close or eject buttons which are on the physical player

Document Camera Projection:

  1. Power switch on document camera must be switched on

  2. Select Doc Cam on the Device Selection screen to display document camera

Microphone Options:

  • Microphones are available for use; each device must be powered on separately from classroom equipment

  • The microphone is located in the drawer of the Media Tower.

  • Volume is controlled from the all Source screen

Ending the Session:

  1. Press Home and End Session on touch panel to end session

  2. A second prompt with appear that states: Warning: You are about to shut down the system. Are you sure?" The options are Yes or No. Select the desired option. 

  3. There is a significant amount of time before the system can be turned on while the projectors cool down once the projectors are turned off. The screen(s) will also go up once Yes is selected. 

  4. Remember to restart the classroom computer

  5. Take all personal items especially flash drives, multimedia, or any adapters

Sage Hall Classrooms

Sage Hall Classrooms

Starting the Session:

  1. The touch panel is located on the teaching station

  2. The screen will appear black/blank when idle; touch anywhere to wake it up

  3. Press Start to turn on the system

One projector rooms:

  1. Select On to turn on projector; prompt will state Busy Please Wait while projector warms up

  2. Projector will display University of Wisconsin Oshkosh wordmark until an input selection is made

  3. The input selected across the top of the touch panel will be projected unless Video Mute is selected in the projector menu

Two projector rooms:

  1. Select On to turn on projector(s); prompt will state Busy Please Wait while projector warms up

  2. Projector 2: on the left facing the class

  3. Projector 1: on the right facing the class

  4. Projector will display University of Wisconsin Oshkosh wordmark until an input selection is made

Choosing a source (two projector rooms only):

  1. The top row of the touch panel features the source option. When selected each source will highlight orange

  2. When within a submenu, two buttons appear in the bottom left corner that dictate what signal is sent to the projector

  3. Any source can be projected from either projector. The same source can be sent to both screens.

Adjusting Volume:

  • Audio is controlled by the Room Volume menu at the bottom of the touch panel screen

  • Mic Volume options are only available in lecture halls (Sage Hall 1210, 1214,  & 1216)

  • The green microphone will turn red and mute the microphone when selected

  • Select Audio Source to open up the audio submenu

  • If Follow Projector 1 or Follow Projector 2 is selected whatever source is currently being projected at those sources will emit audio.

  • If audio is desired by a source not being sent to the projector, select the desired audio source

Source Selections:

Desktop
  1. Turn the computer on when entering the classroom as it is not powered by the touch panel display

  2. Please restart the computer at the end of the session

Laptop
  1. The laptop connection (VGA and audio) is available in the Cable Cubby located on top of the teaching station

  2. Remember to bring any additional adapters necessary for connecting the laptop to the projector

Document Camera
  1. Win displays a condensed Windows OS; is can project MS Office files from a flash drive

  2. Live displays the live camera image

  3. The Win/Live button toggles between the two modes

  4. Turn on the document camera as it is not powered on by the touch panel display

Other options:
  • Blu-Ray

    • Can play DVDs, CDs, and Blu-Ray discs

    • The Blu-Ray player is located in the media tower underneath the teaching station

  • Other Sources

    • Cable TV is not available in every room

    • Composite and S-Video selections are for older format players

Adjusting the lighting and shades:

  1. When a session begins the lights and shades will change to accommodate projection (lights dim, shades close)

    1. Common lighting choices are indicated by Presets 1 thru 4

  2. Shade control can be changed beyond the initial projection choice

    1. Selecting down, as an example, and then while shades are lowering selecting down again will stop the shades at their current level. This works for up as well.

Shutting Down the System:

  1. Select System Power in the bottom right hand corner to power off the system

  2. A prompt will appear on the touch panel to display to verify this action. Selecting Shutdown will shut down all the equipment in the room except the computer.

  3. Please restart the computer at the end of the session.

  4. Once Shutdown has been selected, the system cannot power on again until it has cooled down.

Sage Hall 1210 - Theatre Mode

Sage Hall 1210 has two modes:

  • Lecture Mode

    • Operates like all other classrooms in Sage Hall, Above.

  • Theater Mode

    • Lowers a 15' screen

Beginning the session:

  1. The touch panel is located on the teaching station

  2. The screen will appear black/blank when idle; touch anywhere to wake it up

  3. Select Theater Mode 

    1. While in Theater Mode only the Blu-Ray player in Sage Hall 1210 closet (1210A) can be displayed

    2. Press the open/close button to eject the disc tray, place media, and then close tray with the same button

    3. Utilize touch panel display to play, fast forward, or rewind media

Shutting Down the System:

  1. Select System Power in the bottom right hand corner to power off the system

  2. A prompt will appear on the touch panel to display to verify this action. Selecting Shutdown will shut down all the equipment in the room

  3. Once Shutdown has been selected, the system cannot power on again until it has cooled down
