Learning Tools Interoperability Integrations for Canvas

Here is the link of LTIs currently approved by UW System - https://www.wisconsin.edu/dle/external-application-integration-requests/ - note that due to licensing, not all LTIs are available at all campuses.

There are four types of Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) integrations available for use in Canvas:

  1. Installed and enabled for all courses

  2. Installed and available for instructors to enable on their own

3. Available to be installed by the instructor

The following list of free apps have been tested and approved by the UW System. Instructors can install these apps on a course by course basis. The UW System has provided Instructions on how to install the apps within a course. The description for each app below comes from links within the UW System external Applications integration request webpage.

  • Badgr

    • Canvas LMS has selected Badgr as its native badging solution. Badgr is now available to all Canvas users as an easy way to issue and earn badges.

  • GeoGebra Graphing Calculator

    • Easily solve math problems, graph functions and equations, do statistics and calculus, combine with interactive geometry, save and share your results.

  • Graph Builder

    • Graph builder lets you define graphs based on simple or complex equations and chart them dynamically. Zoom and move the graph around and then embed it into course content.

  • Internet Archive

    • The Internet Archive hosts public domain video, audio, books, images and other resources. Links to any of these resources can easily be added to any course content.

  • Khan Academy

    • Search for and embed Khan Academy videos into course material. Khan Academy focuses on short lessons on math, science, etc. Uses the embedded player so students earn points for watching videos. Currently no search functionality is provided through the Khan Academy API so we can’t add search, but once that’s supported on their side we’ll definitely add it.

  • Public Resources

    • An open LTI app collection accessible via Google, Microsoft, GitHub, or Twitter login

  • Quizlet

    • Search for and embed publicly available flashcards and question sets from Quizlet. Questions can be embedded directly into content as flash cards, review, or as a study game. Please note this tool does not utilize Quizlet’s login capabilities so it will only search content that has been publicly available.

    • The tool is very easy to set up and only requires the configuration URL. Once added to a course, you’ll find a Quizlet button in your content editor that allows you to search the Quizlet public collections. Once a Quizlet is found, simply click on “Add Quizlet” to embed the flashcards directly within the content.

  • Redirect Tool

    • Add links to external web resources that show up as navigation items in course, user or account navigation. Whatever URL you specify is loaded within the content pane when users click the link.

    • To configure this app you specify the text and URL you’d like to add to navigation elements in the LMS, then check the areas you’d like it added to. User navigation will only appear if this app is installed at the root level.

  • Twitter

    • Embed lists of recent tweets or individual tweets from Twitter. Lists can be derived from search results, or from a user’s twitter feed.

  • Wikipedia

    • Search through English Wikipedia articles and link to or embed these articles into course material.

4. Available by Request Only

The following list are the approved LTIs that can be quickly installed in your course by a request placed with the HelpDesk. Note that the request is required for each course, each semester.

  • Cengage - Book Publisher

  • McGraw Hill (Campus, connectED, SimNet) - Book Publisher

  • Macmillan Learning - Book Publisher

  • Pearson (Mylabs) - Book Publisher

  • TK20 - Student Portfolio Management System - licensed by COEHS only NOTE:  Instructors who have tested this LTI have noticed it is not all that useful and have reported it is easier to use the website rather than using it within Canvas. We are still happy to install it for you but please test it.

  • MyBusinessCourse - Cambridge Business Publishers

Process for Requesting a New LTI

Before a new LTI integration may be used it needs to 1) be licensed for use and 2) be approved by UW System. The process for approval includes license verification, functional testing of the LTI, accessibility testing, and information security review. If you want to request an LTI that isn't on the list, please contact the UWO Help Desk with information about the app.
